manta horns comparisons?

i would like to add a large format set to my collection.
On ebay there are two sets for a decent price MR 5124s and 564s.
The 5124s according to the altec lit has a really nice coverage pattern, but a slightly lower output than the 564s.
is coverage more important than theoretical output in this case?

If you spread energy over a wider area it is less concentrated at any one point. I'd do the 5124.

You will have to turn them down anyway.

i was planning on using them outside or in a larger room. (the 511s work just fine in the living room.) i just want something that'll match the 816 VIs

5124/288 is 107 dB 1W/4 feet

single 816/416 is 99 dB 1W/4 feet

Ah. You hadn't mentioned which LF. I still don't think an issue.

First thing, ALWAYS look at the measuring standard. On the sheet you reference it says see note 1. You quoted one watt/one meter. By that standard, the 5124/288 is 109 db.

actually i kinda did mention which LF

but not really wanting to split hairs. sure i'll have to dial them back a bit. but i have to do the same with the 511 802's in my living room also. (side note, why is it that we always seem to go for biggest and baddest. when in most home setups 806s 807s would be plenty loud enough?) i went ahead and got the 5124s. i'm finally moving into large format territory.

May be my personal preferences, but across the middle region a 288 devastates a small format.

One reason for your observation might be the bigger speakers mean your amp doesn't strain as much.
